Rock Your Career: A Journey Upward, Literally!

Elevate Your Career with Grit, Growth, and Resilience

In the whirlwind of life, juggling work, family, and everything in between, finding the time and energy to embrace discomfort might seem like an impossible feat. The truth is, it's an essential aspect of your personal journey and a key factor in navigating the peaks and valleys of your career.

Ever felt overwhelmed by the demands of your hectic schedule? I recently embarked on a rock climbing adventure with my 8-year-old, an activity that initially left me feeling like an idot and terrified of heights.

Yet, within 10 minutes, I found myself two-thirds up a wall, grappling with shaky arms and the fear that the auto belay wouldn't work. Instead of waiting for life to become easier or for imposter syndrome to fade, it's time to lean in and embrace the discomfort. Eventually I had to close my eyes and leap! (Shockingly, the auto belay did work!)

Remember, the process is meant to be uncomfortable, scary, and challenging—because that's normal. It doesn't mean you're a failure, should give up, or don't belong.

Let me share a glimpse of my journey:

Day 1: Conquered the top once, with an inner dialogue you would never say to anyone else. “You are such an idiot, everyone is looking at you, you are so fat, you will never be able to do this.”

Day 2: Reached the top of 50% of climbs, with a brief moment of discomfort.

Day 3: Triumphed at 80% of attempts, fueled by inspiring climbers. Laughed as my daughter kicked my butt.

Amidst the monotony of daily life, from commuting to meetings, we often seek quick dopamine hits from streaming, social media, and food. But what if you could give your brain, physiology, and body a triple boost by expanding your tolerance for discomfort and practicing doing hard things?

🔥 Statistics affirm that those embracing challenging tasks exhibit higher levels of grit, resilience, and adaptability—qualities that are pure gold in the business realm. Your ability to navigate discomfort can be a game-changer in the rollercoaster of your career.

Now, I get it; adding one more thing to your already busy life seems daunting. Especially when stress and overwhelm are frequent companions. But don't let your stress brain deceive you; embracing discomfort is a practice that strengthens your ability to handle life's challenges.

Here are 4 ways to start incorporating this practice into your life:

  1. Try it Once: Schedule one exciting and slightly scary activity—be it ice baths, rock climbing, or speaking at an event. Test the waters and observe how you feel.

  2. Bring a Buddy: No extra points for going solo. Bring a friend along for mutual accountability and an added boost of support.

  3. Calendar Commitment: Plan ahead and commit to dedicating 2 hours each month to personal growth and skill enhancement. Put it on the calendar and make it non-negotiable.

  4. Multi-tasking Mastery: Make it quality time with a friend, partner, or child. Set it on auto-repeat for a regular commitment without overthinking.

  5. Put it on Auto and Repeat: Pick the same day and time and put it on repeat. Then you will start to schedule around it instead of having to rethink it every month, trying to fit it in.
