Want to save time? Take the long way.

I’m a busy working mom of 3. I don’t have time to do lots of different things all day long.   I have minutes and I need the power tools that I can multi-task the crap out of.  This one is SO simple is seems crazy.  Don’t believe me? Try it out for a few days and let me know how it works.

Side effects may include:

  • increased focus

  • increased energy

  • increased productivity

  • increased quality of sleep

  • reduced stress

Strapped for time and want to increase focus, energy, and productivity?  Take the long way.  Wait, what?!  I thought you said you were going to save me time.  Yup, I got you.

So, what does taking the long way mean? It means thinking small and finding little ways to move as often as possible throughout your day. (No changing clothes required.)

  • park as far away as you can in the parking lot

  • walk around the block before going into a building

  • take the stairs and go around one more time

  • take the long way to the bathroom

(And NO it doesn’t work if you are on your phone or on your smart watch at the same time)

What could such a small difference possibly make?

From a brain science perspective, moving your body, getting natural sunlight, and taking movement snack breaks has the ability to reduce stress and bring our executive functioning back on line.  We aren’t designed to stay stuck in stress all day long.  When we are stuck in stress all day it limits our brain power and our  ability to problem solve, plan, focus, self regulate and so much more.

So what could this look like in real life.

7:45 Walk kid to school (20 minute stroll)

8:30 Walk into office- take the long way around ( 4 minutes )

11:00 Coffee and bathroom break, walk around building and up and down the stairs (5 min)

1:00 Do 10 pushups on desk & 10 air squats in between zoom meetings (1 min)

3:00 Take 20 minute walking meeting (20 min)

5:15 Walk around the block before jumping into the car
